2017: New Litter of Puppies

September 15, 2017 By John Menneer Leave a Comment

It’s Wednesday the 2nd August 2017 and Koha has given birth to her second litter of pups. Her first litter was in June of last year – 6 female pups. This latest litter is 9 puppies, but after day 1 only 7 remain; 5 male and 2 female.  As of penning this article today the puppies are about 6 weeks old and very cute, and starting to be very playful and building their confidence.

Yesterday I took them on their second trip in a vehicle for an outing to a neighboring pine forest – some new country for them to explore (see photos below). At first they were cautious about this new environment with its new scents and sights, but within a few minutes they were running about and testing out their hunting tools. Koha played with her pups for a while, but was more interested in the fresh pheasant scent that was about. She is a lovely dog with a very relaxed temperament and a keen hunter. When she was 20 months old (April 2015) she won the novice class of the Waikato Gun Dog Club Rough Shooters Trial. Later that year she went on to acheive a Prize I score in the Intermediate Hunting Dog Test held by the New Zealand Versatile Hunting Dog Testing Association (NZVHDTA). Koha’s category scores in that test are equal to the best scores that any dog in NZ has achieved in the Intermediate Test of VHDTA, with her retrieving and searching earning her a rare honorary notation.

As for the sire (Oskar od Jemiluk) he is also a wonderful dog having a gentle nature, but being a hard hunter. From Czechia he came with a long list of hunting credentials including many Prize I scores in the challenging Utility Field Test (UFT). The UFT is designed to test a hunting dog’s usefulness for the on-foot hunter in all phases of hunting both before and after the shot, in field, forest, and wetland, and on different species of game. In this respect, cooperation and control are essential ingredients of the overall performance. The entire test should, as nearly as possible, simulate actual hunting conditions. Oskar is passionate about water and shows a real excitement and strong prey intent when he is searching for game. He excels in all areas of hunting as any dog of his standing should.
